The idea is based on the very matured technology of Bluetooth  (BLE) beacons. It is a very standardized technology, and we suppose that any new car now has at least one BLE module onboard (if no, it is not so hard to add a tiny and cheap module into the car).

  We just place a few beacons with unique IDs on the traffic lights and provide information to the cars about the current colour of the traffic light. its duty-cycle, time to switch on or off, etc. Thanks to built-in GPS, the car knows its current location and knows the location of each beacon, thanks to its unique ID. So, we can know all the necessary data from the traffic light ahead and can provide it to the driver using any existing ADAS system (visual or audio way).
